The Star Trek: Voyager Skip-It Watch-It Guide

We will update this page as we finish episodes and draw our conclusions. Episodes will be linked to our individual reviews as we complete them.

Season 1

Pilot: Caretaker Parts 1 and 2 We say: Watch it, begrudgingly. 2/5 Janeways The titular starship gets tossed 70,000 lightyears away from home, hilarity ensues.

Episode 2: Parallax We say: Watch it! 4/5 Janeways It's good! Chakotay and Janeway discuss new hires while stuck in a black hole.

Episode 3: Time and Again We say: Skip it. 2/5 Janeways Time-travel shenanigans send our heroes to a planet where everyone dresses like candy corn

Episode 4: Phage We say: Skip it. 3/5 Janeways We consider this one a soft-skip. If you're enjoying your run and aren't incredibly grossed out by the Viidians, it's got some important moments for the overall plot.

Episode 5: The Cloud One says skip it. The other says watch it. 2/5 Janeways A rare split decision! In which Voyager unwittingly goes on a Fantastic Voyage.

Episode 6: Eye of the Needle We say: Watch it. 3/5 Janeways After discovering a wormhole, the crew gets faked out about heading home.

Episode 7: Ex Post Facto We say: Skip it. 3/5 Janeways Tuvok goes full Hercule Poirot on some bird people while Paris suffers.

Episode 8: Eminations We say: Skip it 3/5 Janeways A soft-skip episode. This episode doesn't advance the plot, but has some cool alien stuff with a solid ending.

Episode 9: Prime Factors We say: Skip it. 2/5 Janeways Weird, pleasure-loving aliens are overly familiar yet unhelpful.

Episode 10: State of Flux We say: Watch it. 4/5 Janeways A twisty-turny tail of betrayal.

Episode 11: Heroes and Demons We say: Watch it. 4/5 Janeways The holodeck goes haywire and the Doctor must fight his way through Beowulf.

Episode 12: Cathexis We say: Skip it. 2/5 Janeways A thriller that doesn't.

Episode 13: Faces We say: Skip it. 3/5 Janeways The Vidiians are super gross.

Episode 14: Jetrel We say: Watch it. 3/5 Janeways A surprisingly dark episode, driven by Neelix's experiences during a genocidal war.

Episode 15: Learning Curve We say: Skip it. 2/5 Janeways The ending of the first season plays off some concepts established early on, but doesn't deliver anything new.

Season 2

Episode 1: The 37's We say: skip it. 2/5 Janeways Amelia Earhart frozen in a tube. 'nuff said.

Episode 2: Initiations We say: Skip it. 3/5 Janeways A soft-skip episode. It feels very long, but has some interesting Kazon lore and some good Chakotay content. Also Aron Eisenberg (aka Nog)!

Episode 3: Projections We say: Watch it! 5/5 Janeways Our first perfect score. A strange, twisting, story centered on the Doctor where nothing is what it seems.

Episode 4: Elogium We say: Watch it. 3/5 Janeways Some space worms get sexy feelings for Voyager and Kes considers having a baby. It's a bit slow, but it's an early turning point for the show.

Episode 5: Non Sequitur We say: Skip it. 1/5 Janeways It was all a dream. Meanwhile, Harry Kim flubs a presentation at work.

Episode 6: Twisted We say: Skip it. 2/5 Janeways Everyone is lost because Voyager is being “twisted.” People frustrated by bad directions turns out to not be hugely dramatic.

Episode 7: Parturition We say: Skip it. 1/5 Janeways Paris and Neelix settle their weird jealousy conflict on a camping trip and bond over mothering a wet puppet.

Episode 8: Persistence of Vision We say: Watch it. 3/5 Janeways A thriller episode where Janeway is stricken by terrifying hallucinations. Starts strong but land a little weaker.

Episode 9: Tattoo We say: Skip it. 1/5 Janeways In this very special episode of Ancient Aliens, we get a cargo bay of problematic tropes. A funny B-plot and strong Chakotay content can't rescue it.

Episode 10: Cold Fire We say: Skip it. 2/5 Janeways The loose end of the Caretaker's mate remains unresolved in this snooze of an episode. Good Kes and Tuvok content can't revive it.

Episode 11: Maneuvers We say: Watch it! 3/5 Janeways After executing a heist aboard Voyager, the Seska-Chakotay-Kazon love triangle gets messy. Checks in on some major early series plots.

Episode 12: Resistance Our first ever double split decision! Stargazer gives it 4/5 Janeways and says watch it! LCARS gives it 2/5 Janeways and says skip it! Pursued by fascists, Janeway and a broken man must stage a prison break. A predictable story with surprising, and heartfelt, character moments.

Episode 13: Prototype We say: Watch it! 4/5 Janeways In this robotic grand tour, B'Elanna tries to save an artificial species. This episode twists and turns, and hits on just about every sci-fi robot trope. It doesn't break the mold, but shows what beautiful things the mold can make.

Episode 14: Alliances We say: Watch it! 4/5 Janeways Janeway considers possible alliances that may go against Federation law. Along the way, the Kazon become a more complicated foe. A gripping watch from start to finish.

Episode 15: Threshold We say: Skip it! 2/5 Janeways The infamous lizard episode. Definitely not boring, but weird and a little silly. If you can stand the body horror, it may be worth watching because of its reputation alone.

Episode 16: Meld We say: Skip it! 3/5 Janeways A mind meld between Tuvok and a murderer ends with disastrous results. Tim Russ is captivating as Tuvok, but the episode doesn't have much to say.

Episode 17: Dreadnought We say: Watch it! 4/5 Janeways B'Elanna is forced to confront her past in the form of a hyper-intelligent cruise missile. Good sci-fi and strong character building make it a thrilling ride.

Episode 18: Death Wish We say: Watch it! 3/5 Janeways Discussing the moral implications of suicide with the Q is interesting, but uneven tone means this episode doesn't quite land.

Episode 19: Lifesigns We say: Watch it! 5/5 Janeways The Doctor learns about love and loss after starting a romance with a holographic Vidiian.

Episode 20: Investigations We say: Watch it! 4/5 Janeways Neelix's morning announcements show reveals sabotage on board Voyager. Capping off a long-running B-plot with some spy thriller intrigue.

Episode 21: Deadlock We say: Watch it! 4/5 Janeways Voyager is doubled, and circumstances mean only one can survive. It's gripping, and we would give it five Janeways, but a last minute trade makes it...complicated.

Episode 22: Innocence We say: Watch it! 5/5 Janeways A moving and gentle episode where Tuvok explores parenting from the Vulcan perspective. More importantly: Tuvok sings.

Episode 23: The Thaw We say: Skip it! 3/5 Janeways The Matrix in 45 minutes, but with a killer clown. The episode has a tricky problem, a clever solution, and strong acting, but Creep du Soleil is surprisingly boring.

Episode 24: Tuvix We say: Watch it! 3/5 Janeways Neelix and Tuvok are merged into a single being, and moral quagmires ensue. As an enormously controversial episode. You should watch it—even if you disagree with its ending.

Episode 25: Resolutions We say: Skip it! 2/5 Janeways Chakotay and Janeway are stranded in a plot designed to create sexual tension. No one like substitute teacher captain Tuvok. Vidiians. A snooze, but memorable for how the ham handed premise reverses course (for the better).

Episode 26: Basics, Parts 1 and 2 We say: Skip it! 1/5 Janeways Seska and the Kazon take the ship while the crew is forced to rough it on a crappy planet. Shooting back and forth between boring and insulting, there's hardly anything to enjoy. This ties up some loose ends, but not in a satisfying way.

Season 3

Episode 1: Basics, Part 2 We say: Skip it! 1/5 Janeways See above.

Episode 2: Flashback We say: Watch it! 5/5 Janeways Janeway must travel into Tuvok's memories of his past aboard the USS Excelsior to solve a medical mystery. Throw in Captain Sulu and some Vulcan truthbombs and the result is grand.

Episode 3: The Chute We say: Skip it! 1/5 Janeways Tom and Harry are trapped in (another) alien prison. Voyager seeks to free them. No one is acting like themselves, but at least Tom and Harry can blame the torture chips in their brains.

Episode 4: The Swarm We say: Skip it! 2/5 Janeways The Doctor loses his memory and has to endure the treatment of a holographic doctor for holograms. It's a strong set up, undercut by a shallow b-plot about angry bug aliens.

Episode 5: False Profits We say: Skip it! 3/5 Janeways Two lost Ferengi set themselves up as gods in the Delta Quadrant, then Voyager rains on their parade. A better episode than you might expect, but the Feregni aren't quite over-the-top enough and the ending is weirdly grim.

Episode 6: Remember We say: Watch it! 4/5 Janeways B'Elanna has an Inner Light moment when her dreams reveal a dark secret. A deeply uncomfortable and challenging episode, it might not grab you right away but it's worth it.

Episode 7: Sacred Ground We say: Skip it! 2/5 Janeways Something, something, the conflict of science and religion. This gets two Janeways because of Estelle Harris, otherwise it's just a ritualistic ordeal.

Episode 8-9: Future's End, Parts 1 and 2 We say: Skip it! 2/5 Janeways Voyager tries to do The Voyage Home for the 90s. There's some charming fish-out-of-water moments, but it's a messy and unsatisfying two-parter. Also, Sarah Silverman is here.

Episode 10: Warlord We say: Watch it! 4/5 Janeways The titular warlord of the episode takes over Kes' body and stages a coup. It's an intriguing twist on Kes, and features some remarkably gripping acting.

Episode 11: The Q and the Grey We say: Watch it! 4/5 Janeways Q proposes procreating with Janeway in order to end a Q civil war. It's fun, but doesn't dig into the cosmic conflict as much as we'd like.

Episode 12: Macrocosm We say: Skip it! 3/5 Janeways Janeway must retake the ship from giant viruses in spooky, Alien-esque sequences that bookend some overly long flashbacks. We like the action, but the flashbacks kill the mood and drag the episode.

Episode 13: Fair Trade We say: Skip it! 2/5 Janeways A supremely uncomfortable episode in which Neelix makes all the wrong choices. While there are some nice speeches to hear, and some callbacks to TNG's The First Duty, it's a predictable snooze.

Episode 14: Alter Ego We say: Skip it! 2/5 Janeways Kim falls in love with a holodeck character, but it's really about Tuvok. There are some genuinely good moments with our favorite Vulcan in this episode, but overall it's a bit too dull to justify itself.
